Books & Baked Goods

Read any good books lately?

Come to “Books and Baked Goods” on Monday, November 20th at 7pm in Voorhies 126 and share the wealth! Bring a book recommendation of your own, baked goods if you can (we’ll love you forever), and come hang out with other book-lovers. Who knows, you may end up finding that perfect book for the upcoming long weekend or winter break!

Also, sign-ups for Story Time at local elementary schools will be held during this event. Just bring your schedule and sign up with Tamaray Starling.

Hope to see you all there!

It’s Story Time!

Student volunteers from The English Club at UC Davis want to come and read at your school!

We are happy to announce the beginning of a brand new program to encourage reading in the youth community of Davis. In doing so, we offer the opportunity to have volunteer undergraduate students who are passionate about literature come into the classroom and make reading fun for kids!

Themes for Story Time:

International Fairytales
Fairytale Canon (Aesop’s, Grimm’s, etc.)
Poetry
Holiday
Superheroes
Animals
Foods
Author Emphasis
Historical Fiction
Sci-Fi

When setting up Story Time for your class, please keep the following information in mind:

  • The number students in your class.
  • The number of English Club members needed (2 members are a minimum for large group readings, more will attend if you wish to split the class into smaller groups).
  • The time of the reading (25-50 minutes).
  • The type of reading: Would you like just a reading or a reading with follow-up activities?
  • The books you would like read. Please look through our Themes for Story Time to see what we offer. You may, of course, request we read books of your choosing instead.

To set up a Story Time event at your school or for more information, contact Tamaray Starling at (650) 619-3604 or email us at EnglishClubUCD [at] gmail.com.

We hope to read with you very soon!

Themes for Story Time

Welcome!

NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, NOV 1 IN VOORHIES 126 AT 8PM!

ALL BUTTON DESIGNS ARE DUE NOV. 1 BY MIDNIGHT.

Button-Design Contest
We’re currently asking for submissions on buttons designs. All we require is that the designs fit a 1.25 inch button and be in some way related to English (as in more than just written in English). The designs may be drawings or written sayings (ex. I heart puns or hug me, I read). Our events coordinator will be purchasing a button maker so that we may make the buttons ourselves and sell them as fundraisers.

All buttons designs are due by Nov. 1 at midnight. You may either bring them to the meeting that will be held that evening at 8 or e-mail them to EnglishClubUCD [at] gmail.com .

Reading to Children
Our publicity head and events coordinator are in the process of creating flyers and approaching local schools about reading to children. Our target age group is K-3 grade. They will be visiting the schools along with the Avid Reader and Farmer’s Market on Nov. 3. If you are interested in helping with the publicity/organization please e-mail Tamaray Starling at tcstarling [at] ucdavis.edu.

We will be having sign ups for the actual readings as soon as we can. If you’re interested in participating in this activity please e-mail me back at EnglishClubUCD [at] gmail.com.

English Club Newsletter
The newsletter is currently looking for staff. Though several positions have already been filled we would still like to get more people involved. If you’d be interested in writing for the newsletter (interviews with profs., flash fiction, poetry, etc.) please contact Michelle Jackson at mtangjackson [at] gmail.com.

Also, the newsletter staff is currently working on two short pieces in which they’d like everyone to participate. Please e-mail your answers to the questions listed below to EnglishClubUCD [at] gmail.com and look out for the newsletter to see if your answers were selected!

1. What is the worst paper title you’ve ever used? In answering, please include a short blurb on what the paper was about as well.

2. What is the best response to the question: “So…what are you going to do with a degree in English?” We’ll be putting the newsletter out before Thanksgiving and thought this would do well in helping make the family atmosphere a little more bearable this holiday season.

Ideas for Fundraisers
We have a lot planned for the upcoming year and to do it all we’re going to need some money! We’ve got some ideas in mind but we’d really like to hear from everyone about what they think would work. So, if you have any ideas please either e-mail them or bring them to the meeting.
